Harvey’s Heroes: How Austinites can help survivors of Hurricane Harvey

It’s been a rough week here in Texas. As an Austin-based podcast we’ve felt the wake of Hurricane Harvey pass over us and our friends across the Lone Star state. Damages are estimated to be between $75 billion to $160 billion, and thousands have been displaced. In trying times we are faced to unleash our inner hero and take action. In the spirit of the podcast some of our past guests are lending their services in the recovery effort. Below are a few of our past Certified Superhumans who are helping the victims of Harvey, along with ways you can help them.

Austin Pets Alive! (ep.16) has been taking in displaced animals from Houston shelters, and have set up a temporary shelter off of Burnet road. They are in need of:

  • Medium & Large wire creates
  • Sheets
  • Towels
  • Food bowls
  • Dog & cat food
  • Litter
  • Baking pans (for makeshift litter boxes)
  • Leashes
  • Collars

And of course volunteers and money. You can register as a temporary volunteer here, and donate supplies directly at 7711 Burnet Rd. Suite 7723, Austin, TX 78757. Follow their efforts through the hashtag #APAHarvey.

We Are Blood (ep. 30)is looking for blood donors to help supply Travis and surrounding counties hospitals with blood to cover the recent influx of victims of Harvey who are taking refuge in Central Texas. This means the usual 200 donors a day will not cut it for the moment. You can make an appointment at any of their three locations or wherever a mobile blood drive is held. Make an appointment now!

The HOPE Campaign (ep. 23) is holding a massive donation campaign at the Native Hostel, from Wednesday to Sunday this week. They are in need of:

  • Baby diapers, wipes, formulas and clothes
  • Toiletries like toothbrushes, toothpastes, soap, etc.
  • Snacks and nonperishable food items
  • Clothing
  • First aid supplies
  • Towels and bedding supplies
  • Pet supplies

Also, on Thursday night they are holding a DJ set with all proceeds going towards Harvey relief.

WellAware (ep. 21) is providing potable clean water to the victims of Harvey, clean one of the most needed disaster relief items. You can contribute to their mission here.

Harvey has been a catastrophic natural disaster to the Lone Star State, but we’re Texans and if there’s one thing we’re known for is taking great pride in our state. Most importantly, it doesn’t matter if you’re from Houston, Austin, or even Chicago, we are all capable of being heroes, and we will get through this thanks to the help of the many heroes involved. Now go out there and show the world your inner superhuman!
